BCH/Powertech – Statement on Site C Clean Energy Project

February 26, 2021

To: All MoveUP Members at BCH & Powertech

This morning, the B.C. Government announced that after careful consideration and review, they will proceed with the completion of the Site C Clean Energy Dam Project.

Our union represents members from many diverse backgrounds and industries.  Individuals who have a wide range of opinions, for some, we understand that the Site C Clean Energy Project is a controversial one.

We recognize the decision made by the government was not an easy one but given the circumstances, the most prudent choice was to continue. This is a project that has already been significantly invested in by the people of British Columbia, including all of us.

With the right leadership at the helm moving forward, Site C can live up to its potential of serving our need for affordable, clean power as well as allowing B.C. to continue to be a leader in the clean energy sector and a key supplier to the region, which will bring economic benefits to our province.

Having stability and continuity for this project is key to allowing the investment that we have all made pay off so that it can benefit future generations.

For our members at BC Hydro, particularly those who are working at and supporting the Site C Clean Energy project, this stability and continuity ensures they do not have to continually look over their shoulder to wonder if their job will be shuttered and their ability to make a living is put at jeopardy.

Our union will continue to press government to ensure this project, as well as any future energy-related projects, are in line with our union’s values that places the right of workers at the forefront, commits to Indigenous reconciliation, and advances our goal of tackling the climate emergency.

In solidarity,

Rysa Kronebusch
Vice-President, Utilities
