BC Transit – Become a Job Steward
September 5, 2018
To: All MoveUP Members at BC Transit
Our job stewards occupy the most valuable roles in our union. Stewards provide workplace leadership and information, insight and understanding to the staff and elected representatives at the MoveUP office. They offer support and guidance to their co-workers, keep little problems from becoming big ones, and help make the workplace function smoothly. In bargaining, they make sure the needs of the members are represented at the bargaining table to ensure you have the best collective agreement possible.
Your collective agreement is one of the most important documents between yourselves and your employer. It determines your wages, benefits and conditions of work. We need your input to continue to improve your agreement and make sure it reflects your needs.
Currently, your worksite is lacking job stewards. We are looking to appoint stewards from the following areas, so please consider putting your name forward for this important role.
-fleet
-stockroom
-dispatch/depo
-scheduling/planning
-training/marketing
-customer service
Becoming a job steward is a rewarding experience. It’s an opportunity to help and support your colleagues, while learning valuable skills. As a steward, you will learn about your and your co-workers’ rights, and how to stand up to make sure members in your workplace are treated fairly. MoveUP offers regular opportunities for training to learn all the skills needed, which include conflict resolution and a deeper understanding of your collective agreement.
We’re looking for people we can train to be top-notch workplace advocates. We want to make sure you and your co-workers get all the info and support you need.
Please read our online member guide “What is a Job Steward and How do I Become One?”
