BC Civil Liberties – Learn, Grow and Lead by Becoming a Job Steward at MoveUP

February 4, 2022

To: All MoveUP Members at BC Civil Liberties

As you know, we are heading into collective agreement negotiations with BC Civil Liberties. Your collective agreement is one of the most important documents between yourselves and your employer. It determines your wages, benefits and conditions of work. We need your input to continue to improve your agreement and make sure it reflects your needs.

Currently, your worksite does not have a job steward. In preparation for the upcoming bargaining, we need to elect a job steward to serve with Union Representative Lee Stowell on the bargaining committee.  Please consider putting your name forward to fill this important role.

Our job stewards occupy the most valuable roles in our union. Stewards provide workplace leadership and information, insight and understanding to the staff and elected representatives at the MoveUP office. They offer support and guidance to their co-workers, keep little problems from becoming big ones, and help make the workplace function smoothly. In bargaining, they make sure the needs of the members are represented at the table to ensure you have the best collective agreement possible.

Becoming a job steward is a rewarding experience. It’s an opportunity to help and support your colleagues, while learning valuable skills. As a steward you will learn about your and your co-workers’ rights, and how to stand up to make sure members in your workplace are treated fairly. MoveUP offers regular opportunities for training to learn all the skills needed, which include conflict resolution and a deeper
understanding of your collective agreement.

We’re looking for people we can train to be top-notch workplace advocates. We want to make sure you and your co-workers get all the info and support you need.

Please read our online member guide “What is a Job Steward and How do I Become One?” and consider putting your name forward.

If you are interested in becoming a steward or learning more about the role, please email Christy Slusarenko at cslusarenko@moveuptogether.ca.

In solidarity,

Christy Slusarenko, VP Combined Units
