January 26, 2022

To: All MoveUP Members

MoveUP along with other affiliates and the BC Federation of Labour’s Occupational Health and Safety committee, have been lobbying government to act on the issues around asbestos.

The BC government has launched a consultation on asbestos abatement licensing and training. Please complete their three engagement questions once you click on the link you will be directed to read the three questions, then under How to participate, there is an e-mail link provided for your response to these three questions, your Feedback will be accepted until 4 p.m.  (PT) on February 11, 2022, at 4 p.m.  (PST).

Asbestos remains the single leading cause of workplace-related death in British Columbia; preliminary numbers show that 51 workers died from asbestos-related causes in 2021 alone. Every day that goes by without action risks adding to that toll.

You can find more information and background here.

Planning some renovations?

With the pandemic society is spending more time in their homes, and with that home renovations are on the rise.  Did you know that between 1950 and the 1990s asbestos was used in more that 3,000 building materials! Asbestos awareness for homeowners
