Arbitration ruling on special leave

Your union is advising all ICBC members who have had special leave requests temporarily suspended pending the outcome of an arbitration ruling to contact your union representative so that an appropriate merit assessment can be conducted for each individual file. This is in response to a recently-rendered arbitration decision that was handed down involving a fellow member.

Although your union was confident in the merits of the grievance, ultimately Arbitrator Chris Sullivan chose to interpret the collective agreement language very restrictively and required very strong, explicit language in order to support union and employee rights. We are disappointed in the ruling, but we will continue to hold the employer accountable in the future for rights that we have negotiated.
