Advocating for health and safety wherever you work

May 25, 2017

To: All MoveUP members at ICBC participating in the working from home pilot project

Advocating for employee health and safety is a role your union takes especially seriously, whether you are at the office, on the road or working from home. When MoveUP learned that ICBC intended to forego the health and safety site visits it had previously agreed to in LOU #13, Executive Board member Brian Martens and Union Representative Ryan Stewart took immediate action on your behalf.

We are pleased to report that the union was able to resolve this issue without a formal grievance. We have successfully achieved an acknowledgement by the employer that health and safety site visits will proceed and all inspections will be completed by June 30, 2017. Further, the employer has agreed with the union’s request to meet in advance of any future expansion or other implementation of work from home to discuss and attempt to cooperatively address safety issues as laid out in the LOU. We will continue to hold the employer’s feet to the fire regarding its obligations to your occupational health and safety, regardless of where anyone works.

In the next while you should be hearing from a health and safety committee member who will book a time to come to your home and ensure your new work area is safe and your ergonomic requirements have been adequately addressed and resolved. If you have any concerns or questions about the inspections, please do not hesitate to contact a job steward from your ICBC headquarters. We also encourage you to read through LOU 13 to ensure you are aware of its contents and how you are protected.

In solidarity,

Annette Toth, Vice President – ICBC
Ryan Stewart, Union Representative
