International Day of Climate Action: October 24

By Kristin Hewer, MoveUP Environment Committee member

International Day of Climate Action falls on Saturday, October 24, 2026. It is a grassroots day focused on building awareness, reducing emissions and driving policy measures against climate change.

This day was popularized by 350.org, the environmental organization, to advocate for lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide to 350 parts per million. The first-ever International Day of Climate Action saw incredible participation across 181 countries taking more than 5200 actions.

Their core focus is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, halting global warming, protecting biodiversity and pushing governments to honor international climate agreements. International Day of Climate Action promotes activities such as:

  • Clean-up campaigns such as removing trash from local parks, rivers and beaches;
  • Tree-planting by restoring forests to act as natural carbon sinks;
  • Educational events which include hosting workshops, rallies and seminars on green energy; and
  • Making sustainable choices such as adopting renewable energy options, using public transit and cutting down on daily waste.

The International Day of Climate Action is important because it turns concern into visible, coordinated action, showing decision-makers that ordinary people expect serious progress.
