CapU – Lonsdale Campus Closure

As many of you have likely already heard, Capilano University announced this morning that it is planning to shut down the Lonsdale campus at the end of the Spring 2026 semester.
In 2019, the University expanded its presence by opening CapU Lonsdale, establishing a branch campus in North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale community.
For the past six years, the Lonsdale campus has provided education to nearby residents and anchored the University’s presence in North Vancouver.
Yesterday, the University advised the Union for the first time that it intended to publicly announce the permanent closure of the Lonsdale campus today, with a planned shutdown at the end of the Spring 2026 term.
At the same time that Capilano is moving forward with this closure, the provincial government has initiated a sector-wide review of British Columbia’s post-secondary education system in response to fiscal pressures facing institutions across the province.
Government officials have said that increased public funding is not a practical option currently and that the review is intended to identify ways to achieve sustainability in the short and long term.
This review is rushed and lacks meaningful consultation. It is clearly a vehicle to justify cuts, mergers, tuition increases, or other measures that could reduce access and affordability in public post-secondary education while directly negatively impacting working families in the sector.
MoveUP will continue to advocate forcefully for affected members’ rights, both legislatively and directly with the employer, and will hold the University fully accountable to its obligations under Section 54 of the Labour Relations Code, including meaningful consultation, full disclosure, and the exploration of all reasonable alternatives before any impacts on our members proceed.
