IMPORTANT NOTICE: Public sector strike notice issued; How it affects you
August 29, 2025
To: All MoveUP members
To all MoveUP members,
Today, the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) and the Professional Employees Association (PEA) announced their respective members have authorized a strike vote and they have issued a 72-hour strike notice to the BC government.
This means that legal picket lines at government services may begin as early as Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
At this time, we do not know what services or locations may be impacted. We will provide our members with an update as soon as we have more information.
If you encounter a legal picket line of any sort, do not cross it. This may include Service BC locations or BC government liquor stores, for example.
If you encounter a picket line at your work location because you share a common worksite with BCGEU and/or PEA members:
- DO NOT CROSS A PICKET LINE.
- Take note of the location of the picket line (i.e. specific address, if there are multiple entrances, which entrances are impacted)
- Speak to the picket captain at the location and let them know your worksite is behind the picket line.
- Stay at the picket line and show your support.
- Email president@moveuptogether.ca with the details of the picket line so we can coordinate further support.
- If you are working from home and you receive word that your headquarters has a picket line, stop working and advise your manager that your headquarters is behind a picket line. Then, immediately email president@moveuptogether.ca so we are aware.
As we head into Labour Day weekend, it is very timely to remember that it was union members fighting for better working conditions that gave us many of the workplace benefits we have today.
This is why the striking members of the BCGEU, and the PEA have our full support. Their fight is our fight, and their ability to affect change will benefit our members in both the public and private sector in the long run.
If you see a picket line, tell the striking workers you have their backs and that you will take your business elsewhere in solidarity. If you drive by a picket line, honk your horn and wave! It goes a long way to bolster spirits!
Sending our solidarity to all working people,
Annette Toth
President
