Update on IBEW bargaining progress and impact on MoveUP members
August 7, 2025
To: All MoveUP Members at FortisBC and FortisBC-CSC
Today, we have learned that IBEW 213 has applied an essential services order. This is a proactive move for the IBEW to be prepared for which essential service roles will continue to work as normal in the event of a strike.
We want to make it clear that this does not mean a strike is imminent. No strike or job action is currently underway, and no picket lines are currently in place. IBEW 213 will still be required to issue 72-hour strike notice before a legal picket line can be set up.
Will an essential services order affect MoveUP members?
We anticipate that there will be some MoveUP members working in roles that will be deemed as an essential service. When we have that information, we will pass it on to you. For members in those roles, it means they will be required to continue working as normal even if a picket line is set up.
What is the latest on the IBEW 213 bargaining with FortisBC?
While we don’t have any specific details about their bargaining, IBEW 213 has been very communicative with us. We understand they have made progress in their latest talks and that the essential services application is just out of precaution. We are cautiously optimistic that IBEW 213 members will be able to reach a fair deal soon and that no strike action will be necessary.
We are continuing to update our Frequently Asked Questions page addressing more specific concerns you have. If you have specific questions not addressed in the FAQ, please reach out to your Job Action Committee (JAC) assigned to your area.
Picket pay information
If IBEW goes on strike and our members are unable to attend work, our union has a robust defence fund that is here to support you. We encourage members to register their information with us through the Direct Deposit Authorization Form to avoid any delay in payment.
If a strike is authorized and notice is served, we will provide further updates including how we will support IBEW members and respect their picket line, both in-person and virtually, and what is required for you to qualify and access picket pay if necessary.
Thank you for your ongoing support and solidarity.
