Hertz – Policy Grievance on Pension Contribution Update

April 9, 2025

To: All MoveUP members at Hertz Vancouver

As you may be aware, the union and employer met to try to resolve the policy grievance related to pension contributions.

The union informed the employer that members needed more time to provide pension contributions for both 2023 and 2024 since this was the employer’s error, and because members are also likely making pension contributions for 2025.

Because the error required informing the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the pension regulator, it has created some legal issues Hertz is currently dealing with.

The union has had several conversations with Hertz and has expressed to the employer that members are concerned with the delay.

The union met with the employer again last week (April 2, 2025) and the plan moving forward is as follows:

  1. Hertz will put in their employer share that they should have for 2023 and 2024.
  2. There is no requirement for employees to contribute unless they want to do so.
  3. Employees can choose to make contribution and if they do, the amount will be via payroll deduction over the remainder of the 2025 calendar year to ease the burden of making these 2023 and 2024 contributions.
  4. The exact timeframe for regulatory approval is not known currently, but it is expected to be soon.

Once Hertz gets the formal regulatory confirmation, information bulletins/memos will go out to all staff with more detailed information by Hertz and concurrently by MoveUP.

Members who provided cheques will have them returned uncashed as the payroll deduction is the method to be used, which again allows the back pension “true-up” to be less painful when spread over several pay periods.

In solidarity,

Daniel Storms
Union Representative
