Job Action

Vancouver Shipyards – Bargaining Update #6

July 17, 2024

To: All MoveUP members at Vancouver Shipyards

The Poly-Party Council of Unions, which includes MoveUP, represents all unionized workers employed at Vancouver Shipyards.

Further to the bulletin sent out on Monday, we have issued 72-hour strike notice to the employer and notified the Labour Relations Board (LRB). Upon receipt of notification, the LRB acknowledged that the time of receipt was 11:51am on Monday, July 15 and therefore the required 72-hour notice period will expire at 11:51am on Thursday, July 18.

As our first phase of job action, the unions are implementing an overtime ban beginning at noon on Thursday, July 18. What this means is that no union members shall perform overtime after 12:00pm on Thursday. All overtime will be considered struck work. When job action like an overtime ban is in place, essentially the overtime is a picket line and working overtime would be crossing that picket line. MoveUP’s Constitution and Bylaws governs the process on how members may be sanctioned if they cross a picket line.

The parties are scheduled to return to the bargaining table on Friday, July 19 and again next week. We remain hopeful that the collective voice of the members, heard loud and clear from the strong strike mandate, shows the employer that their last comprehensive package was inadequate.
