ICBC Road Test Changes

Changes to Road Tests and the Graduated Licensing Program

ICBC has advised us that they are planning a review of the road test system, including looking at shortening the length of tests and reviewing the GLP program. We have already shared with them our concerns with road tests being shortened and the idea of pumping through more road tests each day.

It is our opinion that requiring you to do more road tests every day potentially puts you at greater risk. More road tests mean you may be required to rush from test to test, more so than now, and that with each change of driver your risk of a collision might increase. We believe this idea will not only have the potential to impact your physical health but more certainly your psychological health. We also don’t believe this is a long-term solution to the hundreds of thousands of road tests that need to be completed. We are concerned that this will result in everything from burn-out and stress, to unintentional errors and pressure to cut corners. Ultimately, this could result in more unprepared drivers on the road. Is this really the best way to clear up a backlog that has been there for years?

That is why we strongly encourage all Driver Examiners, Supervisors, and Instructors to take the time to share your concerns and feedback on ICBC’s idea to shorten road tests and change and/or eliminate the GLP program. This is your opportunity to tell your employer your thoughts, concerns, and ideas.

Feel free to copy us on your emails and responses to ICBC over the coming weeks and months. We can be reached at icbcconnect@moveuptogether.ca.

In solidarity,

Annette Toth, Vice-President
Kevin Smyth, Senior Union Representative
