Seaspan ULC – Federal Statutory Holiday September 19 and How it Affects You
September 16, 2022
To: MoveUP Members at Seaspan ULC
As you’re probably all aware, the federal government has announced that Monday, September 19, 2022, will be a holiday for the federal public service employees to mark the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
The provincial government has also announced that it will be a holiday for all provincial public sector employees and encouraged all private sector companies to find a way to recognize this day.
Article 7.01 of your collective agreement currently lists twelve (12) statutory holidays and includes the language which states “and any other day that may be stated a legal holiday by the Provincial or Federal Government.
Your Employer has informed us that they will not be observing the holiday and will be requiring all employees to report to work. Your union disagrees with the employer’s interpretation of the language and will be filing a grievance to have the matter resolved. Until a resolve is reached, you will be required to attend work on Monday, September 19 under the work now, grieve later rule.
