FortisBC-CSC – Policy Grievance Update – Meal Provisions Settled

June 1, 2021

To: All MoveUP members at FortisBC CSC

We are happy to inform you that the Parties have settled the policy grievance that was filed when members were not being provided the ability to claim for a meal allowance when they worked three (3) hours or more beyond their regular shift.  This came about while our members were accepting overtime opportunities while working from home.

You may recall, that if you were one of the individuals who offered to work three (3) hours or more beyond your regular shift, the company was not allowing you to claim for a meal expense because you were working from home and therefore it did not count.

The union asserted and argued that despite working from home, the provisions of the collective agreement still and shall apply.  Through the various stages of the grievance process up to including referring the grievance to arbitration, the company and the union settled the grievance.  The language in the collective agreement will apply to all members who are required to work three (3) hours or more beyond their regular shift.

A part of the remedy sought by the union, was to have all affected members who incurred a meal expense when working three (3) hours or more beyond their regular shift to receive compensation for a meal expense.  The company has agreed to compensate all affected members for their meal expense retroactively to April 1, 2020, so if you have a meal receipt showing that you purchased a meal while working the overtime, please submit it to the company.

Please see the attached settlement agreement here.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your job steward.

In solidarity,

Cindy A. Lee
Union Representative
