Kelowna Cabs – Layoff notices rescinded; Labour Board victory affirms MoveUP’s position
November 18, 2020
To: All MoveUP members at Kelowna Cabs
As some of you may have recently heard on the news, the BC Labour Relations Board (LRB) recently ruled in MoveUP’s favour in a complaint that we filed against your employer – Kelowna Cabs – for failing to bargain in good faith. The result of this ruling is that Kelowna Cabs has been ordered to rescind the layoff notices to our members and are directed to return to the bargaining table no later than November 26.
This is a strong victory for our bargaining committee in our efforts to secure our members’ jobs at Kelowna Cabs, as well as to fight for positive gains in your next collective agreement. Following this strong rebuke from the LRB, we hope your employer will now be serious about negotiating a fair agreement that works for both parties instead of trying to mess with our members’ livelihoods by threatening to replace them with a phone app.
We want to thank all of you for your support to date. We will need that continued support in the coming weeks when we resume negotiations to demonstrate to the employer that we are unified as a bargaining unit. Just as you go above and beyond to serve residents and visitors to the Okanagan Valley, we will do the same and work to negotiate a strong collective agreement for you.
In Solidarity,
Anny Chen, Union Representative
