Support Strong During September 18 Strike

On Tuesday, September 18 ICBC staff at 55 claims centres and related locations took to the picket lines to stand up for a fair contract. We heard from members across the province about the warm public reception. As union staff and electeds went from site to site, they heard lots of horns honking in support and saw passersby willing to have real discussions about our issues.

  • “Just wanted to say that we had a very positive response from the public today on the morning picket shift in Maple Ridge! Lots of honks and waves, no negative comments at all. Felt it went very well for staff and would do it again as needed. Thanks,” emailed in one member.
  • “It was a great day on the picket lines with lots of support and enthusiasm,” wrote a member in Burnaby.
  • “What a great day yesterday, overwhelming community support. No negative comments,” said our picket captain in Port Alberni, who also noted their four members on the line in the morning had between them 139 years of ICBC experience.
At least two NDP MLAs, Sue Hammell and Dawn Black, visited picket lines in their constituencies. Even on social media customers were sharing our We Work, You Drive website link and messages of solidarity.

Many members from around the province sent in pictures to be posted on the MoveUP Facebook page throughout the day. You can check them out here

Several picket captains talked to local media and did a great job sharing the key reasons why you were out yesterday. We also had coverage on province-wide media such as Global TV – you can watch a clip of David Black speaking on Global here.
