Victoria Shipyards – 72 Hour Strike Notice
March 30, 2022
To: MoveUP Members at Victoria Shipyards
Earlier this week you should have received a copy of our bulletin with the strike vote results from the March 24th meetings. The result of that vote was 98% in favour of a strike.
Yesterday morning, the Boilermakers 191 formally served 72-hour strike notice to the employer.
What does this mean for you? At the moment, everything is status quo.
We will all be in a position to begin job action late Friday morning. This does not mean we will be going on a full-scale strike on Friday, but we will legally be able to start performing a variety of job actions.
Prior to beginning job action, the mediator assigned from the Labour Relations Board (LRB) will have to asked to book-out, meaning that we no longer require their services. There is a 48-hour waiting period after that request is sent to the LRB before we can begin job action. That waiting period can run concurrently to the 72-hour strike notice issued to the employer.
Again, the hope is that we can get the employer to see that their last offer is substandard and that you, the employees, deserve better.
Your union, along with the other unions, are eager to get back to the table and bargain a fair collective agreement for you.
Please visit your Victoria Shipyards page on our website to view your current collective agreement, as well as copies of past bulletins: https://moveuptogether.ca/workplace/victoria-shipyards/.
We will keep you updated as things progress. Should you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to email me at ygarie@moveuptogether.ca.
In solidarity,
Yudon Garie, Union Representative
