MoveUP Bulletin re: Trainees’ Entitlements to Moving and Housing Expenses
January 15, 2019
To: All MoveUP members at BC Hydro and Powertech
The Union filed a grievance in 2014 regarding the employer’s interpretation of what a promotion is, in relation to article 5.12 and article 7 for members who are selected for training positions per MOU #24, MOU #69, and MOU #73. The grievance was referred to arbitration and was resolved in mediation with Arbitrator Julie Nichols.
The result of the mediation is that a trainee will be considered promoted if their end job carries a maximum salary step that is higher than the maximum step of their current job. A promoted trainee will be eligible for payment, pursuant to article 5.12 (b), of moving expenses identified in article 5.12 (c), provided they meet the criteria in article 5.12 (a) and 5.12 (b).
A promoted trainee is also eligible for payment of moving expenses, per article 7.11 (f), provided they meet the criteria set out in the article. These moving expenses will be paid within 30 days of the date that the employee submits an expense form and receipts.
A promoted trainee is eligible for the reimbursement of house sale expenses identified in article 5.12 (d) provided they meet the criteria set out in articles 5.12 (a) and (d). See settlement agreement for terms and conditions on when the reimbursement is paid and terms of repayment if a member leaves BC Hydro prior to working one year in the end job.
