IBEW strike mandate and what it means for MoveUP members

July 30, 2025

To: All MoveUP Members at FortisBC and FortisBC-CSC

As you may know, members of IBEW 213 employed at FortisBC have provided their bargaining committees with a strong strike mandate. This is part of their effort to achieve a fair collective agreement at the bargaining table.

Although IBEW 213 now has a strike mandate, no strike or job action is currently underway, and no picket lines are currently in place. IBEW 213 will still be required to issue 72-hour strike notice before a legal picket line can be set up.

MoveUP has assembled a Job Action Committee (JAC) to proactively prepare for the potential of a strike.

How we will communicate

Should this situation escalate, and an IBEW strike appear imminent, we will be communicating with you through several methods to make sure everyone receives critical information.

  • The JAC has created a WhatsApp group for Fortis MoveUP members, particularly for those whose workplace are expected to be directly affected by IBEW job action. This will be used to communicate any known upcoming IBEW pickets, providing instant updates including directions on what to do if you encounter a picket line when you arrive at work.
  • Text messages will be used for short announcements or time-sensitive updates.
  • We will also continue to use email for longer messages and less time-sensitive updates.

Make sure we have your information

As a reminder, please register for a Member Portal profile or log in to ensure your information is updated. In particular, we ask that you please provide an active cell phone number so we can reach you through text messages and the WhatsApp group.

Picket pay information

If IBEW goes on strike and our members are unable to attend work, our union has a robust defence fund that is here to support you. We encourage members to register their information with us through the Direct Deposit Authorization Form to avoid any delay in payment.

See our Frequently Answered Questions for more.

If a strike is authorized and notice is served, we will provide further updates including how we will support IBEW members and respect their picket line, both in-person and virtually, and what is required for you to qualify and access picket pay if necessary.

Thank you for your ongoing support and solidarity.
