CMBC – Join Your Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee – Gateway
June 13, 2018
To: All CMBC MoveUP members at Gateway
The Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JOH&SC) at Gateway needs your help. We are looking for members from all departments to join the JOH&SC. This committee is made up of both union members and management who ensure your office/worksite is a safe and healthy environment in which to work.
In accordance with Workers Compensation Act, Division 4, JOH&SC meetings will take place every month to identify and make recommendations that correct unsafe and unhealthy work environments. Your employer must give you the time to attend all JOH&SC meetings. You will also conduct worksite inspections and participate in any investigations or inquiries of the workplace. The JOH&SC, and worker members in particular, are meant to take pressure off of individual employees who raise OH&S issues and to work in cooperation with the employer to investigate and inspect health and safety issues.
The time you spend on committee business is paid for by the employer. If you’re new to a JOH&SC the employer must pay for 8 hours of OH&S related education within the first six months of your start on the committee. In addition, committee members are entitled to 8 hours of education leave each year, paid fully by Coast Mountain Bus Company. We recommend that all committee members take their training through the BC Federation of Labour’s Health and Safety Centre. Here is the link to their website.
If you are interested in joining Gateway’s JOH&SC or would like more information about what is involved in being on this committee, please contact me at cslusarenko@moveuptogether.ca before July 15, 2018.
All bargaining unit committee members are appointed by our union’s president, David Black, in accordance with our constitution.
In Solidarity,
Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President of Combined Units
Niki Schnurr, WCB Appeals and OH&S Representative
