Bargaining
CapilanoU – Bargaining Update and Membership Meeting – October 8, 2019
October 3, 2019
To: All MoveUP Members at Capilano University
Your bargaining committee met with the employer from August 27-30, September 17-18 and September 24-25 for bargaining. We were able to come to agreement on all housekeeping issues and some substantive changes to the collective agreement. We will be meeting with the employer on October 8 and 9 to further discuss substantive changes and monetary proposals.
Intimate partner violence remains a topic of active discussion at the table and in recent media releases. The BC Federation of Labour has recently launched the “Workers Deserve Better” campaign, calling for government to provide a minimum of 10 days paid leave for intimate partner violence leave in the Employment Standards Act. In a survey conducted by the Canadian Labour Congress in 2014, one third (33.6%) of respondents reported being victims of violence from a domestic partner. Almost all respondents agreed that workplace supports such as paid leave and safety policies would reduce the impact of intimate partner violence on workers.
Despite this, BC remains one of the only provinces without paid intimate partner violence leave. However, the BC government is currently undertaking public consultations on this importation issue. We encourage everyone to visit https://www.workersdeservebetter.ca/ to learn more.
In keeping with our commitment to transparency in bargaining and timely updates, we will be holding a meeting off site to discuss bargaining developments. We will also discuss the recent Communication and Action Team (CAT) mobilisation. The meeting details are below:
Date: Wednesday, October 8, 2019
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Seymour Room, Holiday Inn North Vancouver
(700 Old Lillooet Rd, North Vancouver, BC V7J2H5)
This meeting will include some discussion around intimate partner violence, paid leave and our discussion with the employer at the table surrounding this issue. We acknowledge that this subject may be difficult; therefore, we will delay discussion of this topic until the end of the meeting and provide a clear indication in the meeting before discussing this subject.
