Coast Mountain Bus Company – Protecting Your Medical Privacy: M-186 Policy Grievance Update

February 23, 2026

To: All MoveUP members at Coast Mountain Bus Company

In 2024, MoveUP brought forward a policy grievance to change the M-186 form to better protect your medical privacy.

Why is this important?

Your medical information is your business. Employers who are subject to the Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act (FIPPA) are only permitted to collect information about you that is reasonably necessary for the administration of a program.

Your union’s position is that private medical information about your diagnoses is not, and never has been, reasonably necessary for the administration of the employer’s short-term sick leave program.

We feel that disclosing this information is only necessary if a member is seeking long-term disability benefits and potentially if seeking a medical accommodation at work.

Next steps

While information about your diagnoses is no longer being collected, we wanted to ensure any private information previously collected was handled appropriately. We are pleased to let you know we have reached an agreement with your employer on a final resolution.

If you choose, you may have information about your diagnoses that was collected on the disputed M-186 form redacted from your medical file.

To do so, contact: Earle Chan, Manager of Occupational Health and Workplace Management here – earle.chan@coastmountainbus.com.

We strongly recommend that, if you make this request, to use this template form. You can attach the completed form to the email you send.

We also recommend that you cc your union representative, Andrew Cheverie, on all redaction requests at acheverie@moveuptogether.ca.

Once your private medical information is redacted from the disputed M-186 form(s) you will receive a completion notice from your employer and they may not rely on this information in the future.

Your union remains committed to protecting your statutory and contractual rights and we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to have your privacy protected.

In solidarity,

Andrew Cheverie, Union Representative
Dora Wong, Union Representative
