Hertz Vancouver – Update on Policy Grievance-Pension Contributions

May 15, 2025

To: All MoveUP Members at Hertz Vancouver

As you are aware, the union and employer met to try to resolve the policy grievance related to pension contributions.

As noted in our April 9, 2025, memorandum, the union informed the employer that members needed more time to provide pension contributions for both 2023 and 2024 since this was the employer’s error, and because members are also likely making pension contributions for 2025.

Because the error required informing the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the pension regulator, it created some legal issues.

The union was informed yesterday (May 14, 2025) that all legal issues were resolved and that members were sent individual letters about the amount in arrears.  The union was not made aware of such letters going out until yesterday.

One change from our April 9, 2025, memorandum is that the employer cannot legally contribute unless members also contribute their portion as well.

The union is also concerned has created a hard deadline for members to decide to contribute or lose on the right to contribute.

The union did not agree to such a hard deadline and informed the employer it does not accept it since the union was not consulted or notified of their desire to set the May 16, 2025, deadline.

Therefore, the union’s advice to you is as follows:

  1. Hertz will put in their employer share that they should have for 2023 and 2024 if members contribute their share as well.
  1. There is no requirement for employees to contribute unless they want to do so.
  1. Employees can choose to make contributions either as a one-time payment or via payroll deduction, which will be over approximately 12-13 pay periods.
  1. The union advises that members do payroll deduction because it is the easiest to do financially.
  1. If you can contribute, the union strongly urges you to consider doing so, and to let the employer know as soon as you can because the employer is matching your contribution.
  1. While the employer has set the deadline for Friday, May 16, 2025, if you need more time to decide, please email the employer and also email Daniel Storms at dstorms@moveuptogether.ca right away.

As members, you should also know that the pension contributions will be based on the total amount you earn, as was done prior to the filing of the grievance.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this issue, please feel free to contact me at dstorms@moveuptogether.ca.

In solidarity,

Daniel Storms
Union Representative
