Avis – Labour Management Meeting Update
November 16, 2020
To: All MoveUP members at Avis
Your Union Committee held a Labour/Management meeting with Avis management via Zoom on Friday, November 13, 2020. A variety of issues were discussed including a business update, the rover position, management doing bargaining unit work, vacation and sick coverage, and the shuttler call-in procedure. Your job stewards and union representatives took the opportunity to ask questions and make recommendations about the above mentioned issues.
Not surprisingly, your union was anxious to receive a business update. Unfortunately, at this point things are not looking too promising. Management advised that YVR had 25 million passengers in 2019. It is anticipated that YVR will serve 6.5 million passengers this year. It is anticipated that YVR will serve between 6.7 and 11 million passengers in 2021. This means that in a best case scenario it is likely YVR will only return to 44% capacity in 2021. This will obviously continue to have a negative effect on car rental sales. Your union made its position very clear that we would like to see as many members working as possible and that it is unacceptable to have management doing bargaining unit work while so many people are laid off.
The Limited Voluntary Opportunity Plan (LVOP) was also discussed. This plan offers severance to any member (laid off or working) who would like to receive severance and terminate their employment. All eligible employees will be contacted and provided with the option. As everyone’s circumstances are different it is important for everyone to individually assess their own circumstances when deciding what to do. Options include asking Avis or your union questions as well as seeking independent financial advice. The deadline for acceptance is December 2, 2020. Please let the union know if you have any questions about the plan or anything else.
A brief recap of MoveUP’s Avis Budget Common Employer application was provided. All parties have made submissions to the Labour Relations Board asking for further clarification following failed mediation discussions. MoveUP’s position is that all workers should be protected by the MoveUP collective agreement as we have approximately 75% of the membership and a superior collective agreement. We will of course advise all members once a further decision is received from the LRB.
As always, please let us know if you have any questions about the above information or anything else.
In Solidarity,
Shawn Lakusta, Union Representative
Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President of Combined Units
