Avis – Joint Labour Management Meeting Update

June 17, 2021

To: All MoveUP members at Avis

Your MoveUP committee held a joint labour management meeting with Avis/Budget.  These meetings are held regularly but have been put on hold while the parties have been meeting to facilitate the transition of the members covered by the Budget collective bargaining agreement (CBA) into the MoveUP CBA.

The meetings regularly include a business update.  This is an opportunity for management to put forth a general review and report on any anticipated issues that may be of interest to the membership.  Your union committee has the opportunity to ask questions and clarify any points.

Without question, the number one topic is the state of the car rental business at AvisBudget considering the recent announcements that travel restrictions will be eased.  The employer advises that the big factor will be the reopening of the international borders as this will lead to increased airport traffic and corresponding car rentals.  At this point there has not been an announcement about borders reopening but there is a strong belief that this will happen soon as both the vaccination rate and the pressure from businesses to reopen increase.  Domestic travel is approximately 30 percent of YVR business and the other 70 percent is international travel.

We were advised that those members who are currently working will return to full time hours as of June 26th.  It has always been the plan that members would first return to full time hours as business increased and once this has happened then recalls would start.  We were also advised that one RSA is in the process of being recalled and we are hoping this is the start of a significant recall.

The parties also addressed several other issues such as health and safety concerns, short term disability questions, shift bid timelines, and vacation coverage.

The process of transitioning all our members onto the MoveUP CBA continues and the parties are close to producing a draft seniority list and finalizing a letter of understanding.

If you have any questions about the above or anything else, then please contact Union Representative Shawn Lakusta at slakusta@moveuptogether.ca.
