Island Savings Credit Union – Learn, Grow and Lead by Becoming a Job Steward at MoveUP

January 9, 2024

To: All MoveUP Members at ISCU

As you know, we are heading into collective agreement negotiations with First West Credit Union. Your collective agreement is one of the most important documents between yourselves and your employer. It determines your wages, benefits and conditions of work. In an effort to have a more comprehensive view on the employer’s overall operations, we hope to have one job steward who is familiar with the Island Saving Credit Union operation and one job steward who has familiarity with other regional brands. The two job stewards will serve with Union Representative, Anny Chen, on the bargaining committee. If we have more job stewards who express interest, we will facilitate an election accordingly. Please consider putting your name forward to fill these roles.

Our job stewards occupy the most valuable roles in our union. Stewards provide workplace leadership and information, insight and understanding to the staff and elected representatives at the MoveUP office. They offer support and guidance to their co-workers, keep little problems from becoming big ones, and help make the workplace function smoothly. In bargaining, they make sure the needs of the members are represented at the table to ensure you have the best collective agreement possible.

Becoming a job steward is a rewarding experience. It’s an opportunity to help and support your colleagues, while learning valuable skills. As a steward you will learn about your and your co-worker’s rights, and how to stand up to make sure members in your workplace are treated fairly. MoveUP offers regular opportunities for training to learn all the skills needed, which include conflict resolution and a deeper understanding of your collective agreement.

We’re looking for people we can train to be top-notch workplace advocates. We want to make sure you and your co-workers get all the info and support you need.

Please read our online member guide “What is a Job Steward and How do I Become One?” and consider putting your name forward.

If you are interested in becoming a steward or learning more about the role, please email Kory Berikoff at kberikoff@moveuptogether.ca.

In solidarity,

Christy Slusarenko

Vice President
