Enterprise – Layoff Update – April 9, 2020

April 9, 2020

To: All MoveUP members at Enterprise

Your Union met with the employer on Wednesday to address several issues relating to the ongoing layoffs.  The current state of the car rental industry and projections going forward were also discussed.

Through the Job Stewards we have heard the many concerns of our members and we have tried to address them.  This has not always been easy.  As much as we always want to adhere to the collective agreement, we are constantly being faced with issues that were simply not anticipated when the collective agreement was written.  This has required your Union to make decisions based on what we feel is in the best interests of the membership as a whole.  For example, we heard from members who simply did not want to be at work during the current situation.  Voluntary layoffs are not a collective agreement right, but we felt it was important to give our members the option to self-isolate as soon as possible so we approached the employer and reached agreement on that option.

We have asked if more layoffs are anticipated going forward and not surprisingly the employer was not able to give a definite answer.  Your Union will of course pass along any updated information as quickly as possible.

Records of Employment (ROE’s) will indicate the reason for layoff as code (A) shortage of work.  The Employment Insurance website specifically asks employers to use code (A) if the layoff is related to COVID-19 and that should provide for faster processing.

If you have questions about applying for Employment Insurance please refer to MoveUP bulletin #5.  The bulletins are also available on the MoveUP website.

Over the last week we have attempted to visit with and speak to as many of our members as possible at Enterprise.  Of course, we have tried to do this from a safe physical distance.  Apologies to anyone we may have missed.

In solidarity,

Shawn Lakusta, Union Representative
Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President of Combined Units
