Picket lines at Canada Post and the importance of respecting picket lines
November 15, 2024
To: MoveUP Members
As many of our members may be aware, last night at 9:00 p.m PT workers at Canada Post who are members of CUPW (Canadian Union of Postal Workers) went on strike across the country.
The members of CUPW are looking for a fair deal that addresses the rising cost-of-living, something that all of us can relate to. Our union stands in solidarity with the members of CUPW in their dispute and we hope they will be able to come to a negotiated agreement quickly.
If you encounter a picket line, it is essential that you do not cross it. Some outlets may still be operating without any picket lines but be mindful that due to the strike there will be no mail or parcels being processed or delivered.
Some benefit cheques will still be mailed out during the strike, including for the Canada Child Benefit, Old Age Security, and the Canada Pension Plan.
Respecting picket lines is an essential rule for us as union members. When we support other union members who are on strike, it sends a message of solidarity shows all employers that we stand united as workers and won’t be divided in our shared goal of achieving fair compensation for the work that we all do.
You can learn more about respecting picket lines on our website.
In addition to the current dispute involving the CUPW members, there are several other ongoing labour disputes that are currently active. We have tried to list as many as we can in the Solidarity Section of our weekly e-newsletter. For members in BC, you can visit the BC Federation of Labour website for a full list of ongoing disputes.
Some of the disputes include Uni-Select [Bumper to Bumper] (USW Local 2009), Kal Tire Burnaby (IAMAW Local 1857), and Radisson Blu Hotel in Richmond (UNITE HERE Local 40).
If you see any picket lines, please do not cross them. We encourage you to join them to show those union members that they have our support. If there is a picket line that is affecting your ability to show up to your workplace, do not cross it. Instead, contact your job steward or your union representative.
Thank you for your ongoing support for our union and all workers.
In solidarity,
Annette Toth
President
