CMBC and TransLink – Protecting members’ jobs and addressing TransLink’s funding gap announcement

June 28, 2024

To: All MoveUP members at CMBC and TransLink

We are reaching out to all our members at TransLink as we know many of you have questions and concerns about your work and job security with the recent announcement of TransLink’s cost-cutting plan to address a funding gap.

Throughout this process, your union has been in communication with your employer at TransLink to advocate for our members. Our conversations were frank but reassuring. TransLink’s priority for its staff matches what we want for our members, which is to protect and preserve jobs. That means no layoffs and no reduction in salaries.

Supporting the workers who make our public transit system run every day is a top priority for TransLink as they seek a long-term funding model.

As a union, MoveUP has consistently advocated for support for public transit and proper funding to ensure our system can be robust and world-class and continue to provide good union jobs in our communities.

The BC Federation of Labour’s Workers Deserve Better transit campaign, which you may have seen us promote in our weekly newsletter, is one of the many campaigns that we have been involved in. It is vitally critical for members across our union, not just those who work in transit, to recognize the value and importance of our public transit system and put pressure on governments at all levels to fund public transit to the level that we all deserve.

We encourage you to take some time to read about that campaign and urge your friends, family, and neighbours to support it. As your union, we will continue to do our part to push governments at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels to recognize the vitalness of public transit and find a funding model solution that ensures our public transit remains healthy in the long run.

In solidarity,

Graeme Hutchison, President
Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President, Combined Units
Andrew Cheverie, Union Representative
