FortisBC Energy Inc. and FortisBC Inc. Amalgamation Discussions Update #1
November 29, 2018
To: All MoveUP Members at FortisBC Energy Inc. and FortisBC Inc.
In April 2018, the Employer approached the Union to see if there was an appetite to reignite the “amalgamation discussions” between the two bargaining units, FortisBC Energy Inc. and FortisBC Inc. This came during the Union’s preparation in assembling the FortisBC Inc. bargaining committee and the drafting of the survey, as this bargaining unit’s collective agreement was due to expire on December 31, 2018.
During these preparations, the Employer approached and proposed to the FortisBC Inc. bargaining committee the option of extending the current collective agreement for one year, a “roll-over” if you will. This proposal was met with much discussion and it was decided by the FortisBC Inc. bargaining committee that in order to be fully informed and to entertain any discussions regarding such an endeavour, it would serve the membership better to do so without it being attached to contract negotiations.
The FortisBC Inc. membership ratified the one-year extension on October 2, 2018, which has now provided the opportunity for the Parties to engage in discussions and to determine whether or not this is a viable option. The FortisBC Inc. bargaining committee members will now be representing the FortisBC Inc. membership at the discussion table, and just recently, the FortisBC Energy Inc. committee has been established. The Committees are not bargaining committees, they are committees to represent the interest of the membership at the discussion table, along with Union Representative Cindy A. Lee.
The committees are as such:
FortisBC Inc. FortisBC Energy Inc.
Richard Gaylard Michael Carr
Kate Koczor Sheenah Dempsey
Janet Maloff Carol Ross
Dean Temme Norm Stickelmann
We are attempting to secure dates in December and the New Year to initiate discussions. Terms of Reference were established between the Parties and can be found here.
We will keep you posted as things develop.
