CIATU – September 19th Holiday

September 16, 2022

To: All MoveUP members in CIATU

The federal government has announced that Monday, September 19, 2022, will be a holiday for the federal public service to mark the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

The provincial government has also announced that provincial public sector employers have been advised to honour this day in recognition of the obligations around federal holidays that exist in most provincial collective agreements.

Your employer is part of the Construction Industry Affiliated Trade Unions (CIATU) agreement. You should know that most CIATU employers will be observing the day and will close the office.

However, you may learn from your employer that they will not be observing the holiday and will be requiring all employees to report to work.

If this occurs, you should attend work as directed by your employer.

However, that does not mean that we agree with your employer’s interpretation of the collective agreement, and that the Union will be filing a grievance to have the matter resolved.

The Union’s current view is that Article 8 of the CIATU agreement provides a contractual obligation to recognize September 19, 2022, as a holiday.
