Coast Mountain Bus – Transit Security Bullying and Harassment Survey – Next Steps

September 8, 2021

To: All MoveUP members at Coast Mountain Bus

YOUR LAST CHANCE TO VOICE YOUR OPINIONS ABOUT YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT.

As you’re aware, a survey was sent out earlier this year to collect information about bullying and harassment in your department. MoveUP has met with the employer about these survey results, and the employer has brought in an independent third party, Roy Johnson of Neutral Zone, to validate MoveUP’s results and further gather information.

We ask all of you to contact Roy and be honest about your work environment. The only way to fix any problems in your department is to be forthcoming about the problems, so he can develop a plan of action. As you may know, the employer has engaged in previous efforts to get at the root of problems.  Please view this opportunity as the employer’s last attempt. If you don’t speak up now, your work environment will likely stay the same. The onus is on you to provide specific and detailed information. There is also power in numbers, and the survey results indicate there are many people in your department that feel the same way about this issue.

Roy is independent of the employer so what you tell him will be kept in the strictest confidence and will be anonymous. If, as a result of this process, Roy agrees that the concerns are legitimate, it is possible that you may be asked to participate in a formal investigation, but until then, your comments will remain anonymous.

We ask that no one coach anyone else about what information to give Roy. If you are not honest and forthcoming about the problem, the problem will continue. If you’ve witnessed or experienced bullying, harassment, and/or disrespectful conduct in the workplace, you must report this to Roy. This will ultimately allow the employer to take meaningful action to ensure a healthy and safe workplace. Staying silent allows the problems to continue.

Everyone has the right to a psychologically healthy and safe work environment, and MoveUP is advocating fully for all our members at Transit Security. We now need you to stand up and tell the truth to an independent party. Without you speaking out, there is no way to change the work environment. It is also a worker’s duty to (1) protect their own health and safety and the health and safety of their co-workers and (2) to report bullying and harassment (s. 22 of the Workers Compensation Act).

If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please contact Niki Schnurr at nschnurr@moveuptogether.ca.
