The issue

If you are required to attend a lunch meeting, even if lunch is served, you are entitled to your unpaid lunch break. If you are not given an unpaid lunch break then you are entitled to be paid at overtime rates for the lunch meeting you worked.

Unfortunately, it’s common for BC Hydro to ask MoveUP members to attend work meetings during lunch without giving them their lunch break before or after the meeting.

Can I be required to attend a lunch meeting?

Yes. If you are directed to attend, you must attend.

However, your manager is supposed to give as much notice as possible and provide written or verbal notice of whether your lunch break is to be taken before or after the meeting.

What you can do

If you are asked to attend a working lunch meeting and you are not advised by your manager that you are entitled to your unpaid lunch break before or after the meeting, you need to ask your manager when you can take your lunch break.

If your manager denies you a lunch break and/or overtime you need to contact your job steward.
