POSITION:Communications Officer (Full Time Temporary) – 1 month contract.

SALARY: $3,191.00 bi-weekly

Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the MoveUP/USW2009 collective agreement. Additionally, a condition of employment is to supply your own vehicle, also in accordance with the collective agreement. Some occasional travel within B.C. and Canada may be needed, as required.

PRIMARY Duties and Responsibilities/critical tasks:

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The Communication Officer plays a key role in the development and execution of the union’s communication strategies and public relations activities, both external and internal. The ideal candidate will have strong creative, strategic and analytical skills with sound political judgment and is able to manage a number of different projects at one time.


  • Write, edit and produce all manner of written communications including bulletins, letters, newsletters, interviews, reports, memos, speeches, talking points, magazine articles, media releases and advisories, opinion editorials and social media posts.

Public & Media relations

  • Handle media inquiries with assistance from the Director of Communications.
  • Create strategic messages to best frame the union’s issues.

Graphic design

  • Design simple leaflets, images and social media shareables.
  • Produce print publications either on own or in conjunction with a graphic designer.


  • Help maintain the union’s website including planning, writing and updating web pages, working with other staff to produce web content and liaising with web developer and web host.
  • Maintain and augment the union’s presence on current and new social media sites, blogs, etc., in order to increase the overall profile of the union. Additionally, monitor emerging social media tools to see how they can be incorporated into current and future communications strategies. 

Event and volunteer management

  • Organize campaign events and attend events where needed (venues, program, publicity, invitees, direct support.)
  • Contact, supervise and coordinate campaign member volunteers.

Political judgment

  • Compile a daily media monitoring digest with and highlight stories of interest.
  • Create, maintain, and coordinate campaigns within MoveUP.
  • Liaise with other unions, media, and elected officials on behalf of MoveUP.


  • Attend and present at all union functions as required.
  • Manage special projects as needed.
  • Oversee expenditures and adherence to budget(s) and related administrative tasks such as purchase orders and cheque requisitions.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Labour background, with a proven track record of extensive previous experience in union communications and campaigns, as well as political networking.
  • College or university degree/diploma in communications, journalism, English, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of training and experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively with volunteers, multicultural communities, LGBTQ2+ communities, union members, politicians, union leaders, non-profits and community groups on a range of issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Basic HTML coding skills an asset.
  • Excellent project management skills including time management, organizing, scheduling, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and a strong attention to detail.
  •  Demonstrated superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Have demonstrated ability to be proactive and self-starting, as well as the ability to work with a team.
  • Ability to take direction and work under pressure.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or participation in trade union activities essential.
